En un interminable océano de arena flota a la deriva una isla barco, la Ballena de Arcilla. Muchos de sus habitantes tienen el poder de la psicoquinesis, aunque dicho poder conlleva una muerte prematura. A todos ellos les espera una vida corta y confinada a la isla flotante, pero un día Chakuro encuentra, en un barco fortaleza en ruinas, al primer ser humano que alguien ve en el mundo exterior.
